How it works

How a same-day implant works.

This is immediate placement. Dr. Mehdizadeh removes the tooth, keeping the thin bone at the front of the socket, and places the implant in the socket in the same appointment. You have one surgery instead of two. In this case he removed a fractured upper front tooth and placed the implant the same day; the crown went on three months later.

When it can be done

When it can be done the same day.

The implant has to hold firmly in the bone on the day, the site has to be free of infection, and at the front the bone wall on the lip side has to be intact. Your 3D X-ray shows the bone before the appointment. Where the bone cannot hold the implant on the day, we graft the socket when the tooth comes out and place the implant once the bone has healed, so the implant has bone to hold it.

The gum line

Keeping the gum line at a front tooth.

At an upper front tooth, partial extraction therapy can keep the gum line where it is. In the socket shield technique, we remove the crown of the tooth and the back of the root, and leave a thin section of root on the lip side against the bone. That section keeps its ligament, so the bone in front keeps its blood supply, and the implant goes in behind it during the same procedure. Your gum line stays where it was, so the implant tooth does not end up longer than the tooth beside it.

In this case we used it at an upper central incisor lost to internal resorption, and the gum line at the implant now sits level with the teeth beside it.

The same day

Leaving with a tooth.

Where the implant is firm on the day, we fit a temporary crown on it before you leave, shaped to support the gum and kept clear of the bite. You leave with a tooth, and the gum heals to the shape the final crown needs. Otherwise a temporary tooth fills the gap while the implant heals. Once the implant has integrated, our laboratory makes the final crown, shade-matched to the tooth beside it, and we try it in before we fix it in place.

Full arches

A whole arch in a day.

When most or all of the teeth in an arch are failing, the same-day approach applies to the whole arch: where the implants hold firmly, a fixed temporary bridge goes in the day of surgery. That is explained on our All-on-4 page.

How treatment runs

From the scan to the crown.

  1. Consultation and CT scan

A written plan with every visit and the total cost. Same-day appointments are available.

  2. The extraction and the implant

Under local anesthesia, or IV sedation administered here by Dr. Mehdizadeh, so you rest through the surgery.

  3. The temporary tooth

On the implant the same day where it is firm; otherwise a temporary that fills the gap.

  4. Integration

The bone grows against the implant over the following months.

  5. The final crown

Made by our laboratory, tried in, then fixed in place.

What it costs

The same price as an implant placed later.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a dental implant the same day the tooth is pulled?

Yes, when the bone holds the implant firmly on the day and the site is free of infection. Your 3D X-ray shows the bone before the appointment.

Does a same-day implant cost more?

No. It is $7,000 with a custom shade-matched crown, the same as an implant placed later.

Will I leave with a tooth?

Where the implant is firm on the day, yes: a temporary crown on the implant itself. Otherwise a temporary tooth fills the gap while it heals.

What if the bone is not enough on the day?

We graft the socket when the tooth comes out and place the implant once the bone has healed.

What is a socket shield?

A form of partial extraction therapy for an upper front tooth. We leave a thin section of root on the lip side against the bone and place the implant behind it, so the gum line in front stays where it was.

Can a whole arch be done in one day?

Where the implants hold firmly, yes: a fixed temporary bridge goes in the day of surgery. Our All-on-4 page explains it.
