Yes, we typically recommend removing all four wisdom teeth in one appointment, especially with IV sedation. This minimizes overall recovery time, requires only one healing period, and is more cost-effective than multiple procedures. The procedure usually takes 45-90 minutes depending on complexity.
What is an impacted wisdom tooth?+
An impacted wisdom tooth hasn't fully emerged through the gum line due to lack of space or improper angle. Impaction can be soft tissue (covered by gum only), partial bony (partially covered by bone), or full bony (completely encased in bone). Impacted teeth are more prone to infection, cysts, and damage to adjacent teeth, making removal important even without symptoms.
What can I eat after wisdom teeth removal?+
For the first 24-48 hours, stick to cold, soft foods like smoothies (no straws), yogurt, applesauce, and ice cream. Days 2-7, you can add warm soft foods like mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, soup, and pasta. Avoid hard, crunchy, spicy, or acidic foods for at least one week. Do not use straws, as the suction can dislodge blood clots and cause dry socket.
What is dry socket and how do I prevent it?+
Dry socket occurs when the blood clot at the extraction site is dislodged, exposing bone and nerves. It causes severe pain 2-4 days after surgery. Prevention includes avoiding straws, smoking, and spitting for 72 hours; following all aftercare instructions; and gentle rinsing with salt water after 24 hours. Dry socket affects about 2-5% of extractions and is easily treated in our office.
Do I need someone to drive me home after wisdom teeth removal?+
If you receive IV sedation, yes—you must have a responsible adult drive you home and stay with you for several hours. The sedation effects take several hours to fully wear off, and you should not drive, operate machinery, or make important decisions for 24 hours. With local anesthesia only, you may be able to drive yourself, though we still recommend having someone available.
