A Second Opinion on Your Dental Treatment Plan

You have a treatment plan and a quote, and before you agree to it you want someone else to look. That is a reasonable thing to want, whether the plan is for one implant, a full arch, veneers, crowns or anything else, and most dentists expect it.

Your consultation, including a 3D X-ray (CT scan), is free.

Send photos if you have them. Either way, we reply with a cost. No obligation.

When to ask

When a second opinion is worth having.

A second opinion often confirms the first. When it does, you go ahead with more confidence. When it does not, you have two explanations to weigh instead of one. Either way the decision stays yours. We comment on the plan, never on the dentist who wrote it.

The larger and less reversible the treatment, the more a second look is worth. An extracted tooth does not come back, and neither does enamel removed to prepare a tooth for a veneer or a crown. A plan for a full arch, a full mouth or a set of veneers commits you to months of treatment and a large total before the first appointment.

It is also worth having when you have been told something that changes your options: that your teeth cannot be saved, that you do not have enough bone for implants, or that earlier work has failed and has to be redone. It is worth having when two quotes for what sounds like the same treatment are far apart, or when the plan is hard to follow and you are not sure what you would be paying for.

Replacing old veneers or implants has its own page.

The review

What we look at.

The diagnosis. A plan is only as sound as the reasons behind it. We check whether what is written matches what the X-rays and the examination show, and why each tooth is to be treated the way the plan says.

The X-rays and the CT scan. They show the bone, the roots, any infection, and for implants the sinus and the nerve that the plan has to respect. A plan for implants should rest on a 3D X-ray, because a flat X-ray cannot show the width of the bone.

What the plan includes and what it leaves out. For implants that means the extractions, any grafting, sedation, the temporary teeth, the try-in, the final teeth and every visit until they are delivered. A lower total that leaves out the temporary teeth or the sedation is not a lower price.

The materials. What the teeth are made of decides how they look, how they wear and how they are repaired, and the plan should say which material it uses and why.

The sequence. Order matters. Gum work heals before veneers are designed to the new gum line, natural teeth are whitened before porcelain is matched to them, and grafted bone heals before an implant is placed in it.

The total. Whether the quote is one figure for the whole case, or a list that grows as treatment goes on.

Two plans

Why two plans for the same mouth can differ.

Two careful dentists can write different plans for the same mouth, and different is not the same as wrong. One keeps a sound tooth that another would remove; in this case, the sound natural teeth were kept and the new porcelain matched to them. One plans four implants in an arch where another plans more. One chooses porcelain where another chooses acrylic, or stages the work over two trips instead of one.

The test is not which plan is longer or cheaper. It is whether each choice is explained, and whether the explanation matches what the images show.

What to send

What to send us.

Your written treatment plan or your X-rays: either one is enough to start.

If you have a CT scan, send the file itself: a CT scan is three-dimensional, and a screenshot shows one slice of it.

Two photos of your smile, and for a cosmetic plan a photo of your face, smiling.

Send a photo with the form above, and the plan, the quote, the X-ray or CT files and any other photos by email to info@drkiyan.dental.

If you do not have copies, your dentist's office can give them to you, or you can bring what you have to the consultation.

How it works

How a second opinion works.

If you live outside Los Angeles, the first conversation can be a video call: a CT scan or panoramic X-ray from near home helps, but is not required to start. The diagnosis is made in person here. Traveling patients and international patients each have their own page.

  1. Send your plan

Send your plan, your X-rays and your photos, or call (310) 770-3335. A treatment coordinator calls you within two hours during office hours (Monday to Friday, 9 to 4).

  2. The consultation

We review what you sent. At the consultation, Dr. Mehdizadeh examines you and reviews the 3D X-ray (CT scan). The consultation is complimentary.

  3. Our view

You receive our view, and if you want it, our own plan and total.

What you get back

What you get back.

Our view, in plain terms: what the images show, where we agree with the plan, where we would do something differently, and why. If the plan you have is sound, we say so.

If you want it, our own plan. It is a written plan that lists every visit, every procedure and the total cost, and you have it before you agree to anything. Whether you take it, take the first plan, or take neither is your decision.

Any plan

Questions worth asking about any plan.

Whatever you decide, these are the questions to put to any office, including ours.

What exactly does the total cover? Ask for each item by name: extractions, grafting, sedation, temporary teeth, the try-in and every visit until the final teeth are in.

Who does the surgery, and who makes the teeth? In some offices these are different people in different buildings. Here Dr. Mehdizadeh does the surgery and designs the teeth, and the ceramist in our laboratory, in the same building, makes them.

Will I see the CT scan, and will someone explain what it shows? You should see the images your plan is based on.

What happens if an implant does not integrate? It is uncommon, and when it happens it is usually in the first months. Ask who handles it, where, and whether it is part of the plan.

For veneers and crowns: will I see the new design before it is final, and how much tooth will be removed? In this case, the veneers had been placed without a try-in, so the patient never saw the design before it was bonded.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it awkward to ask for a second opinion?

No. It is common before large treatment, and asking is routine. You do not need your dentist's permission to ask for one.

What treatment can you give a second opinion on?

Any dental treatment: single implants, full arches, implant dentures, veneers, crowns, bridges, gum surgery, extractions and full-mouth reconstruction.

Do I need new X-rays?

Send the ones you have. A 3D X-ray (CT scan) is part of the consultation, and the consultation is complimentary.

What if you agree with my dentist?

Then we tell you so. A second opinion often confirms the first, and that is a useful result: you go ahead knowing the plan has been checked.

Will you try to sell me a different plan?

We give you our view of the plan you have. We write our own plan only if you ask for one.

Can I get a second opinion if I live outside Los Angeles?

Yes. Send your plan and images first; the first conversation can be a call, and the diagnosis is made in person here.

My plan is for treatment abroad. Can you review it?

Yes. The same questions apply, along with a few that matter more at a distance.

Is there a charge for a second opinion?

The consultation, including a 3D X-ray (CT scan), is complimentary.
